Take your practiced powers and stretch them out
until they span the chasm between two
contraditions…For the god
wants to know himself in you.
- Rilke
Happiness is neither pleasure nor virtue nor this thing nor that, but simply growth. We are happy when we are growing.
- Yeats
I have only been happy during those periods of my life when I had the courage to act in spite of my fear. I have also found that happiness does not immediately follow the first tenuous steps in a new direction. Rather, happiness is epiphenomenal to continued work in one or more directions. Courage creates the pre-conditions for happiness. Curiously, fears can serve as magnificent indicators of what you ought to pursue. Cultivate sensitivity to the sources and powers of fears in your life.
PursuitOfNovelty is a record of my journeys into the sphere of novelty. We will learn limits as we approach them. Then work and strain until the limit is re-defined and expanded. In yogic practice: Once a practitioner attains a pose, he is encouraged to deepen the pose, to open further. At a certain point of openness, the practitioner can add a variant to the pose.
So what am I pursuing?
Novelty in creative work—acting, music, writing; Novelty in physical exercise and understanding of my body—Muay Thai, Yoga, tennis; Novelty in understanding creative work of others; Novelty in understanding of politics and world events; and Novelty in understanding my place in my community and the cosmos.
This is water. God is love. Namaste.
